Dawson Creek in British Columbia is an amazing small city in Northern British Columbia.  Check it out!
It has recently become my home.  It is currently experiencing some extremely hot weather, unusually hot.  Temperatures have been in the 29-32 degree C range for over a month .( 88- 91 degrees F)  While that may seem mildly hot to some of the readers for us it is sweltering.  We are normally a drier climate due to being on the "other" side of the mountains and our climate is colder as one might suspect -- zone 3 - with temperatures dipping down to -40's C and below in winter.  Winter usually starts in October (October 3rd has been the first day of snow for the past two years) and just keeps going often until late April or May.  This year we did have a day of snow in June, which unfortunately took a great deal of my apple crop, since the trees were in full bloom.  Climate change?  Well if it is, I may best be starting some lemon and banana trees indoors soon.
Dawson Creek has some amazing individuals as does the wider Peace River Region of which we are a part.  The Peace River's tributary the Kiskatinaw River is the main water source for the town, which can get complicated.  But more on that issue later.  There is a vision toward sustainability.  Including a provision for a suburb on 17th street with many sustainable aspects.  In my view it is not nearly radical enough but at least it is a start.  "Aller Anfang ist schwer!" (All beginnings are difficult!) as the Germans say.
Peace Energy Co-operative, with head blogger Don Petit, was instrumental in getting the wind turbines up and is pushing for alternative energy here in town.  The link to his blog is below.  There are a good number of people working toward solar or other alternative energy, water conservation and food sustainability here in town and on the outskirts.  Raising that consciousness is what it is all about, as we struggle with the fact that the oil industry is increasingly one of the main employers in the area.

Check out the Dawson Creek City website below and come visit us!  There is lots of opportunity here and it is an excellent place to live.  Just bring your long underwear for winter, watch out for wildlife on the road and discover Dawson Creek, Mile 0 on the Alaska Highway.
