Scrooge's disciples? Are you one?
So Christmas time is upon us and if you celebrate, you probably have watched or read some version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I have my fav version, which is the classic black and white Alistair Sim's version. Yes, it is not in colour and that is okay with me. As I was watching yesterday something that I had heard many times suddenly touched me. Scrooge talked about how humanity at large was not his business and that his own welfare was. Then he went on to say that "his business (His own welfare) occupied him constantly."
Whoa! Isn't that how we are these days? So BUSY! Unless we are very careful, this technological age, which can so easily connect us, actually ends up demanding so much of our time that we are less connected with those we care about and those that need our help and attention. We are too busy with our own welfare to bother with others. Instead of learning the lesson of the book - that unless we are occupied with distributing our gifts to humanity, we all suffer, somehow some of us are learning how to be Scrooge's disciples - Trying to get money and things for ourselves and too bad for anyone else.
Now please don't take that as a rant against money. Money is just an exchange we make for investing our energy. It is not the problem. Our coldness of heart is the problem. Our willingness to allow ourselves to be so engaged in surviving that we forget to live.
It may not be so blatant. We can convince ourselves that we are truly good people by looking after only our own. The family is paramount. Somehow we don't have time for friends or acquaintances. Isn't that a similar version of the issue?
How many people, other than family did you invite over for Christmas dinner? Wouldn't do that? Why?
And I am not trying to escape notice here either. I did send out Christmas cards to many, both E- and otherwise. But this is the first year I am not having anyone over. I have often done it in the past. There have been a few Christmases past when I have hosted a dinner for those in need - three or four families or donated all the presents. This year is kind of a dud that way. It escaped my notice until today. Because? You guessed it - busy. And I was, having closed a house deal three days before Christmas on top of all the other assorted doings one does.
BUT, now that I am aware, I am already planning a different Christmas next year, although I won't wait that long. The shelters often have tons of food and gifts at Christmas but the end of January through to March can be dismal. Why not give then? I will. Since I wasn't quick enough to get things ready before the holiday. Anyone else?

The Misadventures of Count Percival by Jadzia Cypress and Phelan
Count Percival is an irresistible romp into the laughable blunderings of a would be farmer. An ex-nobleman comes to Canada to turn his unskilled hands to sustainable living. Follow the Count as he learns the hard way about all the things that can go wrong (and do!) on his small dilapidated farm in southern Ontario. There is mice warfare, goat chases, a vanishing pony, and many other misadventures as our poor Count slowly becomes savvy about farm life. Published by Friesen Press.
The exciting writing and the drudgery of technology!
I love to write! I think I always have. Unfortunately the scourge of the present time period is that everyone who is not born into money, royalty, or some other incredibly rare circumstance is expected to spend the greater part of their energy making a living. I have always found my day job challenging and I have enjoyed it as a dharma (a giving to society). However it does not create, except in furtive moments for me, those peak experiences, which I have been privy to during the exercise of my art. Writing my books is a fulfillment uncommon in general life. BUT trying to format my book for e-book purposes - is the depth of drudgery! I am grateful for the technology which allows publishing without the interference of the status quo based publishers and their scissors, yet the machinations of continuous word documents and styles and then the correct compression of pictures, is a bit more than I can believe necessary in this age of technological ease. Nevermind, one of them is done and uploaded at Free e-books.net. More to follow as soon as I can get up my nerve to format again!
